Bir Uthman: The Well a Sahabi Bought for Paradise
Madinah's ziyarah circuit hands you the famous names — Uhud, Quba, Baqi — then drives past the stop this guide defends: an old well in a palm grove, purchased by one man's wealth and given away forever. Bir Uthman — paani sab ke liye — is the story of the Rummah well.
The Story: What Uthman RA Actually Bought
In the Prophet's ﷺ Madinah, sweet water was scarce and owned. The well of Rummah, in the valley of Aqeeq northwest of the city, was one of the few sources of good drinking water — and its owner sold every bucket. The Prophet ﷺ announced that whoever bought Rummah and opened its water freely would have a like reward with Allah. Uthman ibn Affan RA stepped forward. Reports differ on the price, some describing the purchase in stages as the seller raised his terms — but the ending is agreed: Uthman paid, and the well became free for everyone, forever.
He did not stop there: around the well he acquired land and planted date groves, dedicating the estate as waqf — an endowment whose produce fed the poor and Madinah's guests. The Qur'an names the transaction: {Who is it that would give Allah a goodly loan, so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned} — Qur'an 57:11. Uthman understood the loan before the verse had finished being recited. Jo kuch Allah ke liye, woh kabhi zaya nahi hota — whatever is given for Allah is never wasted.
Uthman RA himself lies today in Jannatul Baqi — covered in our visiting guide.
What You See Today
The site — often marked Bir Uthman / Uthman ibn Affan's farm and well — sits in Wadi al-Aqeeq, several kilometers from Masjid an-Nabawi beyond Masjid al-Qiblatain. Restored as a heritage site, it preserves the well structure, palm planting, and remains of later buildings around the waqf, including an old madrasa. Expect a modest entrance arrangement and seasonal hours — check opening status before you go, as Madinah's heritage sites adjust with the seasons.
A realistic visit checklist:
- Half a morning or late afternoon — pair it with sites on the same side of the city.
- Combine with Quba and Qiblatain — the Quba guide and Qiblatain guide complete a natural circuit.
- Add the Well of the Ring — Bir Aris, where the Prophet's ﷺ signet was lost, makes the city's wells a pair.
- Water, hats, walking shoes — the site is open ground, bigger than it photographs.
- Teach before you walk — children who hear the story first remember the well forever; children simply driven to it remember only the heat.
The Lesson That Travels Home
Every pilgrim knows the ayah of spending in Allah's path; Rummah turns it physical: a well you can stand beside, bought at a rising price by a man who never flinched — because the Prophet ﷺ had promised what no market could price. Bir Uthman is a business contract with heaven, still paying its dividend fourteen centuries later. Stand at the well's edge and ask the only honest question the site poses: what have I locked away for Allah that I refuse to take back?
Fold the stop into the fuller ziyarat circuit guide; if days are short, the day-by-day itinerary shows where a heritage morning fits without stealing Haram time.
HTG Travels plans Madinah days that sequence the far sites — Quba, Qiblatain, Bir Uthman, the Uhud side — with drivers who know the heritage timings and hotels placed for both legs. Message +92 317 5054959, email [email protected], or visit htg.com.pk.
Quick Takeaway
The well of Rummah, bought by Uthman RA at a rising price and endowed free forever, with waqf land planted around it — today a restored heritage site in Wadi al-Aqeeq. Pair it with Quba and Qiblatain, and carry home the question it asks: what have you locked away for Allah?
Before You Go
Uthman RA bought one well so a whole city could drink, while in Gaza Israel has made water itself a battlefield — children queueing before dawn with plastic jerrycans at wells that run saltier each month, waiting under the sound of drones for a ration no blockade lets through. In Sudan's Darfur, the Rapid Support Forces have wrecked and contaminated the wells entire towns drank from, and women walk hours in the sun to fill the same jerrycan from a source that may not even be clean. We Stand With Palestine and we stand with Sudan. Ya Allah — a companion freed one well and You have not stopped paying him since; free the water of Gaza and Sudan from those who besiege it and spoil it, let every jerrycan carried at dawn come home full, and give the thirsty of both peoples a drink from Your mercy that no army can cut off.
