The First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah: What to Do at Home in Pakistan

guides

Every Dhul Hijjah, the ummah's attention flies to the Hujjaj — the live streams from Arafat. But the Prophet ﷺ said something about these days that applies to every Muslim not on that plane: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days" (Bukhari). Not Ramadan's last ten nights — these ten days.

Why These Days Outweigh All Others

A companion asked — not even jihad? Not even jihad, he answered, except a man who goes out with himself and his wealth and returns with neither (Bukhari). Ten ordinary-looking days carrying the heaviest weight of the year — letting them slide past unnoticed is the most expensive mistake a household can make.

The Qur'an opens a surah by swearing on them: {By the dawn, and the ten nights} — Qur'an 89:1–2. The tafsir reported from Ibn Abbas RA and the early generation reads these ten nights as the first ten of Dhul Hijjah. Ye din qeemat ke din hain — aur ye laut kar nahi aate.

For planning: Dhul Hijjah 1448 is expected to begin around early May 2027, moon-dependent, Arafah near mid-May — confirm by moon announcement, the same honesty we apply to every date in the Hajj step-by-step guide.

The Deeds That Weigh Most

Ranked not by popularity but by evidence:

  • Fasting the first nine days — above all the Day of Arafah fast, which the Prophet ﷺ said expiates the minor sins of the year before it and the year after it (Muslim). Note the design: this fast was prescribed for the people not on Arafat — the fast belongs to you at home.
  • Takbir — unrestricted through the days and nights, and after the fard prayers from Fajr on the 9th through Asr on the 13th. Pakistani mosques will carry it; your living room should too.
  • Extra salah and Qur'an — a fixed, human-sized plan beats a heroic one.
  • Sadaqah — small and consistent, especially in the first nine days.
  • Udhiyah (qurbani) — arrange it early and on time; the Eid al-Adha planning guide covers the logistics without the chaos.

If Your Parents Are on Hajj and You Are Home

This is the situation half of you are in — the elders in the Haram, the house in Pakistan running on half its heart:

  • Track the journey with understanding. Read the rites before they happen, so when the voice note says "we're at Muzdalifah tonight," the household knows what that night is — the Arafat standing guide and the Mina guide exist for this.
  • Structure the children's days. Small fasts, takbir learned line by line, a qurbani chart on the fridge — parents are the teachers.
  • Keep the house a place of worship, not a countdown to Eid shopping.

The at-home file is not a consolation prize: the Prophet's ﷺ statement covers the fasting mother in Lahore as fully as anyone in Makkah.

Five Mistakes That Cost the Most

  • Treating the ten days as an Eid runway — shopping, catering, and zero extra worship.
  • Skipping the Arafah fast because "we're not pilgrims" — it was prescribed precisely for the ones who are not.
  • Takbir at the mosque, mockery at home. The days demand consistency.
  • Qurbani chaos on Eid morning — book early and let the 10th be about worship.
  • Ending on the 12th. The days run to Maghrib of the 13th; the takbir does too.

Quick Takeaway

Fast the nine — above all Arafah — carry the takbir through the 13th, give steady sadaqah, arrange udhiyah early, and run the house like it knows what season it is.

Before You Go

The best days of the year come for the oppressed too, while in Gaza the takbir after prayer competes with the sound of Israeli drones that never stop circling — and the families there still fast the ninth and stand the nights, because worship is the one act of defiance Israel cannot jam. In Sudan, war has scattered the worship of Dhul Hijjah across refugee camps, where a man in Kordofan raises the takbir and hears it answered by strangers who lost their own mosques to the Rapid Support Forces' fire. We Stand With Palestine and we stand with Sudan. Ya Allah — in these days when deeds are dearest to You, accept the fasting and nights of those who worship under bombardment and open sky, and grant them Eid mornings of return — to standing homes and the life the oppressors swore they would never see.
