ETIAS for Pakistanis: Europe's New Authorisation, Cleared Up

Huzi4 min read

Search "ETIAS" from Pakistan and you'll find two kinds of page: breathless explainers claiming Europe's "new visa" is coming, and third-party sites selling applications for a system that isn't even live yet. Both are wrong in ways that cost money. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System is real — but it was never designed for green passports, and the single most useful thing a Pakistani traveler can know about it is who actually needs it. Short answer: not you, probably — but quite possibly your family.

What ETIAS Actually Is

ETIAS is a pre-travel online authorisation for visa-exempt nationals — passports from countries that do not currently need a Schengen visa (the UK, US, Canada, Australia and others). It covers short stays in 30 European countries, runs up to three years or until the passport expires, allows repeated entries, and costs EUR 20 for most adults, with some travellers exempt. The form is short — passport details, background questions — with most responses in minutes, though flagged applications get manual review, so the official advice is to apply well before travel.

The Part That Matters for Green Passports

Here is the line to screenshot: ETIAS does not replace the Schengen visa. Pakistani citizens are visa-required nationals for the Schengen area, so the process Pakistanis already know — the appointment, the file, the full Schengen application our guide walks through — stays exactly as it is. No EUR 20 shortcut, no online form instead of the consulate. Nothing about ETIAS changes the Pakistan-side process for Pakistanis.

So Why Should a Pakistani Care?

Because families travel together, and passports in one household often differ. Three real cases:

  • The overseas Pakistani family — green passport for one parent, UK or US passports for the children. Green still needs the full Schengen visa; the foreign passports will need ETIAS. Two systems, one trip.
  • The diaspora traveller — a British-Pakistani or American-Pakistani visiting Europe on a second passport: ETIAS is your lane, and it's a fraction of the effort a Schengen visa demands.
  • The group-booker — a wedding party mixing passport colours. Someone in that WhatsApp group must know which half files which paperwork, months apart.

Note one exemption worth remembering: holders of diplomatic, service or official passports from visa-exempt countries are also exempt from ETIAS — relevant for government-track travellers in Pakistani diaspora circles.

What Is Live Right Now: EES, Not ETIAS

While ETIAS waits, its sibling already operates at the border: the Entry/Exit System (EES) — biometric registration of fingerprints and facial images — went live in late 2025 and applies to all third-country nationals, including visa-holding Pakistanis, replacing passport stamps; our EES guide covers the counter experience. EES affects you now; ETIAS affects your foreign-passport relatives later. On timing, honesty is the only policy: the EU has not confirmed a firm go-live date for ETIAS — when announced, a transition window will precede enforcement. Anyone selling you an "ETIAS deadline" today is selling fiction.

Avoiding the Application-Site Tax

When ETIAS does launch, expect the copycats within hours: sites charging EUR 60–90 in "processing fees" for a EUR 20 authorisation — the same parasite economy that already surrounds the digital Schengen visa process and country-specific applications like the Germany Schengen guide. The authorisation exists only on the official EU portal, and the fee is the fee. Family rule: whoever holds the foreign passport applies there themselves, five minutes, one form, done.

Where the Desk Fits In

HTG Travel (htg.com.pk) untangles mixed-passport trips for a living — the green-passport Schengen file, the foreign-passport ETIAS step, the flights that work for both, and a written plan that names who needs what and when. The support line runs around the clock for travelers mid-journey, and clients get real guidance from people who answer, not auto-replies.

Quick Takeaway

  • ETIAS = for visa-exempt passport holders only. Green Pakistani passports keep the full Schengen visa process.
  • EUR 20, valid up to 3 years, multiple entries, online form — for the UK/US/Canadian-passport members of Pakistani families.
  • EES biometrics are already live and apply to Pakistanis at Schengen borders today.
  • No confirmed launch date yet — ignore anyone selling an ETIAS deadline.

Before You Go

Europe refines its digital travel forms while Palestine's movement is decided by soldiers, not software — Israel controls whether a Palestinian may cross to their own field, visit their own mother's grave, a permission no ETIAS question will ever ask about. Ya Allah, end the permit regime that rules Palestinian lives. And Sudan's families would trade every form in the world for one safe crossing — the RSF and the warring generals turned every road into a gamble with death. Ya Rabb, open Sudan's roads to mercy and close them to war.
