Ghar al-Thawr: The Cave Where 'Do Not Grieve' Was Said
Jabal al-Nur, the mountain of revelation, sits north-east of Makkah — flip the map and a second mountain holds a second cave. Ghar al-Thawr, south of the city, is where the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr RA hid for three nights while the Quraysh hunted them.
The Three Nights That Carried a Religion
In September 622 CE, one young man from every clan of the Quraysh had sworn to strike together, so the blood-money would be spread too thin to collect. Ali RA slept in the Prophet's ﷺ bed; under cover of night the Prophet ﷺ slipped out with Abu Bakr RA to a cave on Jabal Thawr, waiting for the search to pass.
Three nights they hid while Makkah turned inside out. The Qur'an preserves those nights: the disbelievers drove him out, {the second of two, when the two were in the cave, when he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon him} — Qur'an 9:40. Ghar se nikalna parta hai jab ghar hi khatre mein ho.
The Support Team Worth Memorizing
The nights in the cave ran on four people:
- Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr — the intelligence officer, collecting what was being plotted by day, reporting back to the cave each night.
- Asma bint Abi Bakr — the provision-carrier, who tore her waistband in two to tie the food bag — earning the title Dhat an-Nitaqayn, the woman of the two belts.
- Amir ibn Fuhayrah — Abu Bakr's freed slave, grazing his sheep over the trail so the tracks were covered and the two men had fresh milk.
- Urayqit — the expert tracker, hired precisely because he was the best guide in the region.
The Spider, the Dove, and an Honest Word
Everyone knows the story: a spider web across the cave mouth, a nested dove, and searchers concluding no one could have entered. A famous account from the seerah literature, carried by Ibn Ishaq, its chain has been debated for centuries. The Qur'an records only the concealment, Abu Bakr's fear, and the tranquility sent down — the miracle the Book preserves is the calm. The lesson holds either way: they did everything humanly possible, and were then protected by what no planning could produce. Trust in Allah, with your shoelaces tied.
Climbing Jabal Thawr Today
The climb is real: 1.5 to 2.5 hours up steep, rocky ground south of Makkah, with scree and no facilities at the top. The Ghar Hira climb guide covers the north-eastern twin — Thawr is the quieter, less-marked of the two mountains.
- Season and gear: cool months only, Fajr start, gripped shoes, two liters of water each, a light layer — and a group. A midday climb in Saudi summer is a medical decision, and this is not a solo mountain.
- Honest guidance: elderly parents and young children should see it from below — the seerah is accessible to everyone; the scree is not.
- Arranging it: most drivers include a Thawr viewpoint stop — the ziyarat circuit guide shows where it fits.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing the two caves. Hira is where the revelation began; Thawr is where the hijrah survived
- Climbing alone or at midday — the two mistakes that turn ziyarat into an ambulance report.
- Expecting a shrine. The cave is bare stone; bring the story with you.
- Ledge photography. The summit rocks are unfenced.

Quick Takeaway
Ghar al-Thawr is the hijrah's hiding place: three nights, four supporters, one verse of tranquility — climb cool, early, and in company if you climb at all, and carry the story up with you — the cave is bare and the story is everything.
Before You Go
Two men once hid in a cave and were kept safe by tranquility sent down, while in Gaza entire families now live months moving from stairwell to stairwell, hiding from Israel's strikes with no cave, no mountain, no spider's web — only Allah between them and the aircraft. In Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces emptied villages overnight, and thousands sleep in the open with their children concealed under whatever cloth they carried, whispering "do not grieve" as a password. We Stand With Palestine and we stand with Sudan. Ya Allah — You sent down tranquility upon Your Prophet and his companion in a cave; send it now upon the hidden and the hunted of Gaza and Sudan, veil them from every drone, and bring them out of these nights the way those two walked out — guided, guarded, delivered to a morning no oppressor controls.
