International Driving Permit from Pakistan: The Complete IDP Guide
Renting in Riyadh, a hire car in Istanbul, Malaysia's coastal road — all of it begins with a slim grey booklet most Pakistani travelers have never held: the International Driving Permit (IDP). Getting one from Pakistan is possible on your own — but the process carries office queues, district-level differences, and paperwork traps that quietly waste weeks.
What an IDP Actually Is
The IDP is a booklet issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, translating your license into the world's major languages. Three things trip up first-timers:
- Not a license. It works only with your original license — carry both, always.
- Not permanent. Valid up to one year from issue, and never beyond the license behind it.
- Not sold by websites. Only government licensing channels issue a genuine Pakistani IDP — more below.
The convention is old, but the world it serves keeps changing — new highways, car-share apps, crossings that did not exist a decade ago. The Qur'an pointed at this restless progress: {...and He creates that which you do not know} — Qur'an 16:8. Duniya badalti rahegi, kaghaz sambhal ke rakhna — the world will keep changing; keep your paperwork in order.
Where Pakistanis Actually Get One
Issuing sits with licensing authorities, not travel agents:
- City traffic police licensing offices — Islamabad Traffic Police and Punjab's centers issue IDPs against an existing local license.
- Rawalpindi (CTP) processes IDPs against your original license, passport, and CNIC, plus printing and delivery charges in the region of Rs. 480 — confirm current figures at your visit.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has gone digital — the IDP application is live on the provincial Dastak app: form, uploads, and fee from home, then delivery.
- Sindh and Balochistan — apply through the licensing branch that issued your license; office visits rather than apps.
Wherever you apply, bring:
- Original valid Pakistani license (not expired, not a paper slip)
- Original CNIC and a photocopy
- Passport — some offices want the visa page too
- Two passport-size photographs
- Fee payment — keep the official receipt
Where the IDP Actually Lets You Drive
Rules differ by destination:
- Saudi Arabia — visitors generally drive rentals with an IDP plus their national license; a self-drive leg toward desert camps starts there.
- UAE and Qatar — short-term visitors need an IDP with their home license at the counter.
- United Kingdom — Pakistani license holders may drive up to twelve months on a visit; carry the license itself.
- Turkey and Malaysia — an IDP smooths the counter; some Turkish firms accept notarized translations, but the booklet is cleaner.
The full rental picture — insurance, deposits, cross-border rules — is in our renting a car abroad guide; the IDP belongs on the master travel documents checklist before any trip involving driving.
The Traps That Cost People Trips
- Fake online IDPs. Glossy sites promise a motor-association permit in 48 hours; counters reject them and border police treat them as forgeries. Not from a licensing authority? Paper.
- License-permit mismatch. An IDP issued against a license expiring mid-trip dies with it. Renew first, then apply.
- Leaving it too late. Processing runs same-day to two weeks depending on district; apply a month before travel.
- Wrong category. The booklet mirrors your license's categories — a car-only license does not legalize a camper.
HTG Travels handles this middle ground weekly: travelers who want to self-drive one leg but keep tripping on sequencing — license renewal, IDP office runs, rental minimums. We answer at odd hours because travel problems do not; every client gets the document sequence in writing. Message +92 317 5054959, email [email protected], or visit htg.com.pk.
Quick Takeaway
A one-year Geneva Convention booklet translating your Pakistani license — issued by traffic licensing offices, via the Dastak app in KP, with Rawalpindi printing and delivery around Rs. 480 on top of the fee. Valid only with your original license, it dies when the license dies, and comes from government channels only. Apply a month ahead.
Before You Go
An IDP is permission to move freely on the world's roads; no permit office on earth can issue that to a Palestinian — Israel keeps closed the Gaza-to-Jerusalem road their grandparents once drove without asking anyone, and in the West Bank a military permit decides which checkpoint a family may cross to bury their dead. In Sudan, the highways between cities have become gauntlets where the Rapid Support Forces stop travelers and take the car, the cash, or the passenger. We Stand With Palestine and we stand with Sudan. Ya Allah — You made the roads of the earth a trust for all travelers; open every road sealed on Gaza and the West Bank, disarm the gunmen who hunt Sudan's drivers, and let both peoples drive to their families, fields, and prayers without asking anyone's permission.
