Makkah Bus 2026: Routes, Fares and the App for Pakistani Pilgrims

guides

Ask a Pakistani pilgrim how to get around Makkah and the answer is almost always "taxi" — even though a full city bus network has been running for two years. Makkah Bus, operated under the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, moved from trial to official launch in October 2023 and now runs 12 routes with 400-plus air-conditioned buses and over 450 stops. A taxi between a distant hotel and the Haram can cost more than an entire day of bus rides, and SAR 4 mein shehar ka chakkar — that is the whole pitch.

The Network at a Glance

Nearly all twelve routes touch the Central Region around Masjid al-Haram. The ones pilgrims actually use:

Route What it connects
Route 1 Jabal Al-Kaaba and Jarwal to the Haram
Route 4 North Makkah and Al-Taneem to the Central Area
Route 5 Express line — fewer stops, fastest Haram runs
Route 7 Haramain rail station via Kudai to the Haram
Route 11 Kudai parking lots and hotels to the Haram

Route 7 links the Haramain railway station to the Haram corridor — useful if you arrive on the high-speed train from Jeddah or Madinah; our Haramain railway guide covers that leg.

Fares and Passes

  • Single trip: SAR 4 on standard routes
  • Express route: SAR 7 — fewer stops
  • Daily pass: SAR 20 — unlimited rides for 24 hours
  • Weekly pass: SAR 80 — the Umrah-trip sweet spot
  • Monthly pass: SAR 250 — for residents

Children under 6 travel free (a child account in the app); ages 6 to 14 pay the standard fare. For a week of Haram round trips the weekly pass is the cheapest mathematics in the trip budget — our Makkah and Madinah spending guide maps where else the riyals go.

How to Pay

Three official paths: the Makkah Bus app (tickets bought with Apple Pay, Mada or a credit card, shown as a QR code at boarding), smart cards from vending machines at major stations such as Kudai and Jarwal, or a simple contactless tap of a Mada debit or credit card on the onboard validator. Set the app up before you leave Pakistan — the airport queue is no place to be typing card numbers.

Stations That Matter for Pilgrims

Three names anchor most pilgrim journeys. Kudai is the major parking-and-ride hub — if your hotel is outside the core, Kudai is where you park or get dropped. Ajyad sits closest to the King Abdulaziz Gate side of the Haram. Jabal Al-Kaaba is the north-side approach for hotels in the Ajyad and Misfalah belt. If you chose a hotel further out to save on room rates — mapped in our Makkah hotel areas guide — the bus converts that distance from a SAR 40 taxi problem into a SAR 4 non-event.

Frequency, Hours and Comfort

Major Haram-facing routes run around the clock, with buses every 5 to 7 minutes at peak times and every 10 to 15 minutes off-peak; during Ramadan the gap tightens to 2 to 4 minutes around iftar and Taraweeh. The buses are air-conditioned, wheelchair accessible, and carry announcements in Arabic, English and Urdu — the Urdu matters at 11 PM when you are tired and half-lost. During Hajj season the network adds special shuttles to Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah, so expect route adjustments in those weeks.

DIY or Desk on This One

Riding Makkah Bus is genuinely DIY-friendly — the app, QR codes and Urdu announcements were built for first-time visitors. What a desk adds is the planning around it: a hotel whose zone makes the bus trivial instead of awkward, and Haram visits timed against crowd waves. The intercity side — Makkah to Madinah — is mapped in our SAPTCO intercity guide.

Quick Takeaway

Makkah Bus runs 12 routes, 24/7 on major corridors, at SAR 4 a trip — express SAR 7, daily SAR 20, weekly SAR 80. Pay through the Makkah Bus app, a smart card, or a contactless Mada tap. Remember three stations — Kudai, Ajyad, Jabal Al-Kaaba — and Route 7's link to the Haramain station. A family on weekly passes moves around Makkah for less than two taxi rides, the quietest saving in any Umrah budget.
