OK-to-Board: The Gulf Airline Check Most Pakistani Workers Discover at the Airport

guides

Every month at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad airports, workers holding genuine UAE or Gulf visas are turned away at check-in. The reason is almost always the same: their booking is missing one small line — OK-to-Board. Nobody warned them, because nobody was supposed to. Here's what it is, who needs it, and how to sort it before you fly.

What Exactly Is OK-to-Board?

OK-to-Board (OKTB) is a verification message an airline adds to your booking after confirming your visa is genuine and matches your passport. It's not a second visa and not a new immigration approval — it's the airline doing its homework before it takes responsibility for flying you into the Gulf.

Why does it exist? Airlines get fined heavily by immigration authorities if they carry a passenger with a fake, altered or mismatched visa. So for paper and electronic visas — the kind most workers receive as a PDF from their sponsor — the airline checks the details against the destination country's system first. If that OKTB message isn't on your booking, check-in staff can refuse you. I've watched it happen at the airport, and it's heartbreaking: genuine visa, paid ticket, and nowhere to fly.

Who Actually Needs It?

There's no single UAE-wide rule — the operating airline's current policy decides your flight. Here's the general picture:

Airline Current OKTB rule for Pakistanis
flydubai Mandatory for Pakistani citizens flying from Pakistan on paper or e-visas. Stamped visa or valid Emirates ID: not required.
Air Arabia Required if you hold a UAE visa copy or e-visa. Carrying the original visa document: not required.
Emirates Currently no separate online OKTB application — documents are checked at the airport. Still carry everything.
Qatar Airways OKTB verification applies for certain visa types; usually arranged via your agent or airline office.
Saudia Generally not required for Umrah or standard work travel, with some exceptions (e.g., medical cases).

Rules change often and vary by route, so confirm with your airline or agent for your exact booking.

How to Get OKTB Before You Fly

You have three routes, and none of them are complicated:

  1. Through your travel agent — the fastest and most common. The agent submits your documents to the airline on your behalf.
  2. At the airline's city office — Air Arabia, for example, asks your sponsor or representative to visit the nearest office with the original visa document.
  3. By email — flydubai handles Pakistan OKTB requests through [email protected].

Documents you'll need: passport copy, visa copy, and your ticket or booking reference. Some airlines also ask for a sponsor letter or Emirates ID if you're a returning resident.

Timing is the part that catches people out. flydubai states a minimum of 48 hours for approval from Pakistan; Air Arabia asks for at least 24 hours and charges roughly AED 15–20. Give yourself 48–72 hours to be safe — never the night before.

This is exactly the kind of paperwork a good agent takes off your plate. HTG Travels (htg.com.pk) handles flight bookings, visa assistance and complete travel planning for Gulf-bound workers, including OKTB coordination — you can WhatsApp them at +92 325 1480148 and usually get a quick reply.

The Three Reasons Workers Get Stopped

  1. Name mismatch — the number one cause. "Abdul" on the ticket but "Abdul Rehman" on the passport; a missing middle name; one spelling difference between passport, visa and ticket. Check all three side by side before submitting anything.
  2. Visa can't be verified — if the immigration system doesn't confirm the visa as genuine, you don't board. Fake visas are a real problem, which is why airlines are strict.
  3. Applied too late — requesting OKTB within 48 hours of departure often means the approval simply doesn't arrive in time.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist

  • Confirm your airline's OKTB rule for your exact route and visa type
  • Match names exactly across passport, visa and ticket
  • Apply at least 48–72 hours before departure
  • Carry printed copies of passport, visa, ticket and any sponsor letter
  • Get written confirmation (email or PNR remark) that OKTB has been added

Before You Fly

Before we talk tickets, a quiet moment for the people of Palestine and Sudan. So many families there are facing hardship none of us would wish on anyone. I keep them in my prayers, and I'd ask you to hold them in your heart too — and where you're able, support trusted humanitarian relief. May safer, gentler days come soon.
