Saudi Tourist eVisa vs Umrah Visa: Which One Should You Actually Get?

guides

Short answer: if you hold a passport from the US, UK, Canada, or most of Europe, get the tourist eVisa — it's faster, cheaper, and lets you travel freely across Saudi Arabia. If you're on a Pakistani, Indian, or Bangladeshi passport without a Western visa, the Umrah visa is your route. I've helped family on both kinds of passports sort this out, and the confusion is real — so here's the honest breakdown.

Who Can Get Which Visa

The Saudi Tourist eVisa is open to citizens of 68 eligible countries — including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and nearly all of Europe. Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh are not on that list, so most Pakistani passport holders go through the Umrah visa route instead.

One important exception: if you hold a valid US, UK, or Schengen visa (even previously used), or you're a GCC resident, you may qualify for the Saudi eVisa even on an otherwise ineligible passport. I know several Pakistani expats in Dubai who entered this way — always check ksavisa.sa for your specific case before assuming.

Cost Breakdown

The eVisa costs roughly SAR 535 (~$142) total, which includes mandatory medical insurance. That insurance covers up to SAR 100,000 in medical emergencies — genuinely useful in a country where healthcare is expensive for visitors.

Umrah visa fees from Pakistan run around SAR 490 for visa alone, or SAR 540 with transport — but in practice, licensed agents bundle visa + hotel + transport, bringing total packages to PKR 45,000–80,000. Insurance is usually separate.

What Trips People Up

A few things I've seen go wrong repeatedly:

  • Hajj confusion: Neither visa lets you perform Hajj. Hajj requires a dedicated Hajj visa through the official quota system — no workarounds.
  • Timing during Hajj season: Saudi Arabia suspends Umrah on tourist visas in the weeks around Hajj (roughly mid-April to mid-June 2026 was affected). Plan around this window.
  • Umrah visa entry deadline: As of 2026, the entry window has been cut from 90 days to 30 days from issuance. If your visa is issued March 1, you must enter by March 30 — book flights accordingly.
  • Airport restrictions: Umrah visa holders must enter via Jeddah, Madinah, Yanbu, or Taif. Flying into Riyadh on an Umrah visa causes problems at immigration. eVisa holders can enter anywhere.
  • Nusuk hotel requirement: Increasingly, Umrah visa applicants must pre-book verified hotels through the official Nusuk app. Your agent handles this, but confirm it's done.

One more 2026 note for repeat pilgrims: Saudi Arabia has also introduced a one-year multiple-entry Umrah visa (up to 90 days per visit) alongside the classic route — if you plan Umrah more than once a year, ask your operator which version they're filing for you, because the fee and rules differ.

So Which Should You Get?

  • Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi passport, no Western visa: Umrah visa through a licensed agent. No real alternative.
  • UK/US/Canadian/European passport (including overseas Pakistanis): Tourist eVisa, every time. Faster, cheaper, more flexible.
  • Pakistani passport + valid US/UK/Schengen visa or GCC residency: Check the eVisa portal — you may qualify.
  • Umrah plus tourism (Jeddah, Riyadh, AlUla): Tourist eVisa if you're eligible; Umrah visa also permits travel now, but with airport limits.

This is exactly where a good agent saves you from a headache.
