Umrah on Behalf of the Deceased: A Parent's Journey Becomes Yours

guides

The request arrives quietly, usually over chai: "Ammi ka umrah mere taraf se kar ke aana — she never got to go." Perform it on her behalf. For thousands of Pakistani families, one seat on the plane carries two journeys — their own, and the one a parent or sibling never lived to make. The practice is real, established, and beautiful when done correctly. It is also surrounded by half-knowledge, so this file sets it out plainly: what is permitted, what the conditions are, and where the honest pitfalls sit.

The Ruling, Plainly

The scholars' answer is permissive and clear: Umrah performed on behalf of a deceased person is valid, and the reward reaches them by Allah's permission. The Haramain scholars' fatwa portal answered this directly — as recently as October 2026 — permitting Umrah on behalf of deceased parents and confirming the reward reaches them. The foundation is the well-known incident of the woman who came to Ibn Abbas asking about her mother who had died without performing Hajj, and the Prophet's ﷺ instruction: "Perform Hajj on her behalf" (Sahih al-Bukhari) — with the reasoning that seals the matter: do you not think that if your mother owed a debt, you would pay it? So the debt of Allah is more deserving to be paid. A journey owed to Allah, in other words, is a debt the living can settle.

The same logic extends to Umrah by consensus of the fiqh councils and fatwa bodies, and the Qur'an's framing of the whole parent-child relationship makes it natural: "Be grateful to Me and to your parents" — 46:15 — gratitude that does not end at the grave.

The Two Conditions That Matter

Scholars set a small number of conditions, and two deserve real attention:

  • Perform your own Umrah first. The stronger position requires that you have already performed Umrah on your own behalf before performing one on behalf of someone else — the delegation must not come at the cost of your own primary obligation. This is why the first Umrah of the trip is yours, and the second, from Tan'eem, is hers.
  • A clear niyyah at the miqat. The intention should specify: this Umrah is on behalf of so-and-so, named, while every ihram restriction applies fully to you — perfume, hair, head covering, all of it. "It's not really mine" cuts no corners; the ihram violations and damm guide applies to the deputy exactly as to the original.

How the Niyyah Works in Practice

At the miqat, as you enter ihram, the intention is made in the heart and on the tongue: Umrah on behalf of [mother's name], for the face of Allah. No special formula is required beyond that naming — and nothing about the rites changes afterward. You will wear ihram, make talbiyah (learned properly once, in the talbiyah guide, and it serves every Umrah after), perform tawaf and Sa'i, and take the halq or taqsir at the end exactly as in your own Umrah. Many pilgrims keep a small note with the parent's name written on it — less for fiqh and more so that in the crowd, at the Multazam, the du'a you make for them carries their name deliberately.

Umrah Badal vs Hajj Badal

The two are siblings, not twins, and the Hajj badal guide covers the stricter conditions specific to Hajj — the obligatory-hajj-first requirement, the delegation rules, and the scrutiny a paid Hajj deputy faces. Umrah badal is the lighter and more repeatable of the two: a second Umrah from Tan'eem on a single trip is a natural, established moment to carry a deceased relative's name, and families who keep the practice report exactly what the fatwas promise — a settled feeling in the chest that a debt of love has been paid forward. For parents still alive, a different and equally beautiful option exists: gifting them the Umrah itself while they can still walk it themselves.

The Paid-Proxy Question

Honesty requires naming the industry: counters exist that will, for a fee, arrange for someone in Makkah to perform a badal Umrah on your behalf. The practice has scholarly precedent — but the risks are the same ones the package quote decoder exists for. You cannot verify the niyyah of a stranger; you frequently cannot verify the Umrah happened at all; and the permit systems now attach bookings to specific travelers, which a casual paid proxy may not satisfy cleanly. The family member who goes personally — son, daughter, sibling — carries none of these risks. Where a paid arrangement is the only option, demand the operator's verification specifics in writing and treat vague answers as the answer.

And for the journeys no one can complete — when a pilgrim dies abroad mid-trip, an entire different file opens: the Umrah death abroad guide covers it, and the janazah you will pray at the Haram connects this file to the ground.

Before You Go

We settle the journeys of parents who can no longer walk them; Gaza's dead had Umrahs planned — visas saved for, leave applied for, a suitcase half-thought-of — that Israel's strikes cancelled mid-preparation, a debt of Allah collected from the wrong party. In Sudan, the mothers the RSF buried without markers left children holding promises of journeys no desk will now process. We Stand With Palestine and we stand with Sudan. Ya Allah — accept every Umrah performed on behalf of the dead, count the pilgrimages interrupted by bombs as completed, and let the unfinished intentions of Gaza and Sudan's dead arrive at Your House on the Day no checkpoint can stop.
