AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027: The Football Winter Pakistanis Can Actually Reach
Update, 5 November 2026: the tournament has been postponed. On 3 November, the Asian Football Confederation announced the AFC Asian Cup will no longer run 7 January – 5 February 2027; it is rescheduled to 23 December 2027 – 21 January 2028, pending final calendar approval, after the regional security situation — including the October attacks on Saudi airports — made a January tournament untenable. The rest of this guide still holds: the host cities, the ticketing channels, the visa lanes and the combo logic. Only the dates moved.
Saudi Arabia hosts the AFC Asian Cup — the first time the Kingdom stages Asia's biggest football tournament, with 24 national teams and eight stadiums across three host cities: Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar, with Riyadh carrying 30 of the 51 matches, the final included. And the opening fixture is the one that will stop a room full of Pakistani fans mid-chai: Saudi Arabia vs Palestine — the pairing the draw handed the Kingdom, and the fixture the rescheduling will rebuild around.
For Pakistanis this remains the rare major tournament that is genuinely reachable — a three-hour flight, familiar football culture, and Riyadh Season running in the same capital. Here is the honest file: the postponement, tickets, the visa reality for a green passport, and how to build the trip.
What the Tournament Looks Like Now
The 19th edition now runs a full month from 23 December 2027 to 21 January 2028: group stage through early January, final on 21 January 2028. Qatar arrive as two-time defending champions. Riyadh carries the heavyweight nights — including the final at the King Fahd International Stadium — while Jeddah and Al Khobar spread the crowds along the coast. The late-December window turns the tournament into a winter-school-holiday trip; the same logic as our cheapest months for Umrah guide, applied to football. Expect the fixture calendar to be redrawn around the new dates before tickets re-launch.
Tickets: Official Channels Only
- Match tickets sell through the official webook platform — sales tied to the January window are being re-launched around the new dates; if you hold January-2027 tickets, watch webook's official channels for the exchange or refund process before touching resale offers
- Official hospitality (category-1 seats plus extras) runs through MATCH Hospitality Asia: three-match Riyadh group bundles from roughly $2,200, semi-final-and-final packages from around $7,000 — again, confirm the new-date terms before paying
- Resale marketplaces already list the opener at $300-plus — a signal of demand, not a place to buy; webook's own fan-protection pages warn against black-market tickets
The Visa Reality for a Pakistani Passport
The plain truth first: Pakistan is not on Saudi Arabia's eVisa list. Pakistani ordinary passports reach the easy online lane only conditionally — with a valid visa or residence from the US, UK, Schengen area or Ireland (the Western-visa lane explained). Everyone else files through two doors:
- The Umrah visa route — the underrated one. Umrah visa holders travel between Saudi cities freely, and the one-year multiple-entry visa covers a December Umrah and a January knockout trip on one approval
- Visit visas via the embassy and authorized-agent lane — slower, document-heavy, exactly the file a desk handles weekly
Start four to six weeks out from the new dates — meaning autumn 2027, not this winter. Full comparison in our Saudi tourist eVisa vs Umrah visa guide. Your document stack:
- Passport with six months' validity — check the expiry now; a passport running out in 2027 needs renewal before the file
- Visa file matched to the new December-January travel dates
- Match tickets bought after the visa lands
- Hotel in the right host city, holiday-week priced
- Insurance, return ticket, and a bank statement that answers the funds question
Getting There and Around
Flights are the easy part: Saudia, PIA and the new Riyadh Air — flying Riyadh–Lahore and Riyadh–Islamabad since late summer — serve the capital. One caveat: Riyadh's King Khalid International is rebuilding from the October disruption at two terminals, so check your airline's status and keep a Jeddah or Dammam routing in your back pocket — detail in our Riyadh airport advisory.
Inside Riyadh, the Metro is the fan's friend: a standard two-hour pass costs SAR 4 and lines run till midnight — our Riyadh Metro guide maps it. In Al Khobar, add a causeway day trip to Bahrain — the causeway guide covers the visa question for that hop.
The Combo Worth Building: Umrah Plus Football
Jeddah is both an Asian Cup city and the Umrah gateway, which makes the new window — late December 2027 into January 2028 — the month to do both: Umrah in Makkah and Madinah across the school holidays, then match nights in Jeddah or a hop to Riyadh. The sequencing logic from our one-visa winter combo guide transfers directly to the new dates, with one warning: a one-year multiple-entry visa issued this winter will expire long before the tournament — time the visa to the trip, not to the news. Sequencing is where a desk earns the fee — visa first, tickets and hotels matched to it. HTG Travel builds exactly these files: message +92 317 5054959 or start at htg.com.pk. Visa aur tickets ek hi file mein hon to match dekhna asaan hai.
Before You Go
A tournament opening with Saudi Arabia against Palestine carries its own argument: a Palestinian team takes a stadium's biggest stage while Israel's siege and bombardment keep Gaza's own pitches buried under rubble and its young players scattered through tents and exiles. Allah knows what those boys would have become. We hold them in our dua: Ya Allah, keep Palestine's children playing, guard every family Israel has driven from home, and let the day come when a Gaza crowd fills a stadium of its own. And we pray for Sudan, where the RSF's war closed the grounds and drove the players out — Ya Rabb, bring Sudan's children back to their fields and give its people back their peace.
